Routers establish and control the flow of data between different networks by selecting paths or routes using routing protocols, typically at the network layer; the category covers wired and wireless routers, virtual routers and routers with or without modems. Modems for internet connection use digital modulation and demodulation to convert between analogue and digital signals for IP-based communication, including fibre, DSL, cable (DOCSIS), satellite and cellular modems. Switches provide connectivity between networked devices through packet forwarding, typically at the data link or network layer, and include managed and smart switches.
